With humor and ingenuity, Sophia Pompéry distorts our perception of reality and familiar objects with subtle mechanisms of illusion. Challenging physical phenomena, she reveals little failures in a conventional system, using both fortunate findings and manipulations of an enchanted nature.
For her exhibition at NuN, Sophia Pompéry shows a selection of objects, a video and a drawing, all related to the theme of measurement. The works play with the viewer's common belief by questioning the standard values of temporality, dimension, or natural laws.
Sophia Pompéry (born in Berlin 1984) lives and works in Berlin. She studied at the Art School Berlin Weissensee, at the State Academy of Art and Design of St Petersburg, and at Institute for Spatial Experiments with Olafur Eliasson, UdK Berlin (2010). She received the DAAD scholarship for a 6-months residence in Istanbul (2012). Recently, she has had solo exhibitions at Galerie Dix9, Paris, Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Germany (both 2013), Arter Art Space, Istanbul (2012), Wozownia gallery, Torun, Poland (2011) and Gitte Wiese Gallery, Berlin (2010).
